Google is introducing a feature, on Chrome for Android called “Listen to this page ” which allows users to listen to web content of reading it. This addition is designed to improve accessibility and offer a way for people to engage with information. After months of development the feature is now becoming available to an audience.
The “Listen to this page” feature enables Chrome users on Android to access text to speech functionality on text heavy websites. Once a webpage has finished loading users can find the option in the three dot menu to “Translate” and “Add to Home screen.” Clicking on it brings up a player at the bottom of the page showing a progress bar play/pause controls and an option to close the player along with details, about the webpage and its source.
Customizable Audio Experience
The Chrome Text to Speech (TTS) function provides customization choices to suit preferences. Users can adjust settings by tapping on the player, which includes a progress bar, 10 second rewind/fast buttons and speed options from 0.5x to 4x. The menu overflow gives users the ability to enable “Highlight text & auto scroll”. Select from voices in US, UK, Indian and Australian English accents, each with unique pitch and tone qualities.
A standout feature of the “Listen to this page” function is its integration with browsing activities. The control bar stays visible when users switch tabs and playback continues when the device is locked long as Chrome remains open. However ending the browsing session will stop the TTS playback. While background play isn’t supported at present Chrome remembers the position, for resuming upon relaunch.
