In an announcement respected analyst Ming Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is getting ready to start production on a line of AirPods, with built in camera modules by 2026. This news aligns with reports by Bloomberg, in February which suggested that Apple was working on AirPods equipped with cameras.
Kuo mentioned that these innovative AirPods will include a camera, to the technology used in Face ID on iPhones and iPads. The main aim is to connect these AirPods with Apples Vision Pro and Apple Vision headsets enhancing the user experience of spatial audio and fortifying the spatial computing ecosystem.
Enhancing Interaction and Gesture Control

The addition of a camera, in the AirPods presents many exciting opportunities. Kuo proposes that this camera could recognize changes in the surrounding environment possibly allowing for control in the air to improve how humans interact with their devices. This innovation has the potential to transform user device interactions providing a engaging experience.
Foxconn, a player in Apples supply chain has been identified as the supplier for the product introduction (NPI) of the IR camera destined for use in AirPods. The company is said to have a production capacity target of 18 20 million units translating to around 10 million pairs of AirPods. While integrating Vision Pro is crucial it appears that Apple may have a strategy, for these AirPods equipped with cameras potentially harnessing multi modal voice and image AI technologies to unlock fresh possibilities in wearable tech.
