Huawei, the technology giant continues to expand its presence, in the consumer electronics sector despite encountering challenges from US sanctions. The company is on the verge of reaching a milestone with one billion active consumer devices highlighting its growing competition with Apple in the important Chinese market.
As per Richard Yu, the Chairman of Huaweis consumer division there are currently around 900 million Huawei devices operating on the companys Harmony operating system. This number has seen an increase, in a span of time. Additionally sales of high end Huawei smartphones have experienced a 72% surge during the five months of 2024.
Huawei’s Harmony OS Gains Momentum
Huaweis Harmony OS has expanded its reach beyond smartphones. Can now be found in a variety of devices, like smartwatches and televisions. In the quarter of 2024 Huawei shipped 11 million wearables surpassing Samsung Electronics in this aspect. This growth has led Harmony OS to surpass Apples iOS in terms of market share in China during the January March timeframe according to a report from Counterpoint Research.
With the increasing user base of Harmony OS Huawei is stepping up efforts to generate revenue from the operating system. The company is exploring options to take a share of profits from in app purchases showing its growing confidence, in competing with the iPhone. However there may be one exception; Tencent Holdings Ltd.s WeChat.
