Meta's Quest Pro 2 development reportedly began in November 2023.

According to reports Meta has started developing the Quest Pro 2 virtual reality headset early, as November 2023. The new top tier device, known internally as “La Jolla ” is planned to replace the Quest Pro 2.

A leaked hardware roadmap from March 2023 indicated that Meta initially scrapped a to be released successor to the Quest Pro 2 in favor of an ambitious model. The La Jolla headset is anticipated to come with resolution displays and maintain the rear battery setup from its predecessor catering well to tasks, like text display and intricate work settings.

Quest Pro 2 to Feature Photorealistic Avatars

Meta's Quest Pro 2 Development Reportedly Started in November

The upcoming Quest Pro 2 holds a lot of promise with the introduction of Metas Codec Avatars technology. This ongoing project is aimed at transforming communication by offering avatars that are controlled in real time using headsets equipped with face tracking sensors. While the technology is still being developed Metas CTO Andrew Bosworth has mentioned that it could be years before it becomes available, for shipping. Despite this hints of Codec Avatars have been spotted in the Quest firmware indicating progress.

The release date for the Quest Pro 2 remains uncertain as leaked information suggests that the La Jolla model is still quite distant in terms of a timeline as of March 2023. The collaboration between Meta and LG for Quest Pro headsets has added complexity to the situation with reports suggesting a delay until 2027 due to disagreements between the two companies. Currently Meta seems to be focusing on the end Quest 3S headset rather than developing a high end follow up, to the Quest Pro.
