Google Urges Pixel Update for Government Workers by July 4th

Google advises government workers to update Pixel phones by July 4th.

Google has given a warning to government workers who use Pixel phones advising them to update their devices before July 4th because of a security flaw. If they don’t comply with this instruction they may have to stop using the affected Pixel phones. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has listed this vulnerability, known as CVE 2024 32896 in its catalog of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV).

Even though Google hasn’t revealed the specifics of the exploit the U.S. Government has highlighted how crucial it is to address this firmware vulnerability. While the warning targets employees primarily it’s advisable for all Pixel users to take actions especially if their devices are linked to business systems.

GrapheneOS, an operating system focused on security has provided information, on the issue stating that this vulnerability is part of a two part solution, for a problem reported earlier in April. The company mentioned that forensic companies are actively exploiting this vulnerability. Additionally GrapheneOS highlighted that the problem affects not Pixel devices but will also be addressed for Android devices once they upgrade to Android 15.

For Pixel users to secure their devices it is strongly recommended to update to the software version. To do this go to Settings > Security & Privacy > System & Updates > Security Update and select “Install.” After the update is installed users should restart their phones to ensure it is properly applied. By taking these steps Pixel users can protect their devices from cybersecurity risks and preserve the security of their data.
