Facebook and Instagram users faced widespread issues on Tuesday morning as both platforms experienced outages that logged many people out of their accounts. The technical difficulties left millions scratching their heads in confusion.
Reports of problems began surfacing just after 10:30am ET. Users trying to access their Facebook and Instagram accounts were greeted with error messages saying “Something went wrong” or that the servers were experiencing issues. Over 500,000 reports flooded the outage tracking site Downdetector over the next hour.
What Caused The Dual Platform Outage?

While the root cause has yet to be determined, similar incidents in the past have been attributed to backend infrastructure issues. As networks of data servers that power these massive social platforms are finely tuned machines, even small configuration glitches can spark domino effect outages. Facebook and Instagram rely on vast interconnected systems to deliver content to billions of users every day without a hitch. When cracks in that foundation appear, they can spread quickly.
By 11am a Facebook and Instagram spokesperson acknowledged the disruption, tweeting that teams were working to resolve the problems as soon as possible. It would take another hour before services stabilized and users could once again access their accounts normally. The outage served as a reminder of just how reliant we’ve all become on these platforms staying online.
