Apple is currently seeking a Chinese AI company to team up with in preparation, for the launch of its Apple Intelligence features alongside iOS 18 this year. The tech giant, based in Cupertino has been engaging in discussions with collaborators, such as Baidu, Alibaba Group and the Beijing based startup Baichuan AI. However no agreement has been formally reached yet.
The necessity for a Chinese AI partner arises from the absence of AI services like ChatGPT in China. In order to introduce Apple Intelligence to users Apple must adhere to the countrys regulations that mandate government approval, for chatbots powered by language models. Given that China has not authorized any AI products developed outside its borders it is imperative for Apple to identify a partner.
Challenges and Delays
Despite Apples attempts to finalize an agreement the company is encountering obstacles. Chinese authorities are hesitant to greenlight Apples language model prompting the company to collaborate with a Chinese AI partner instead. Even if negotiations conclude in the future it may prove challenging for Apple to launch a version of Apple Intelligence by the time iOS 18 debuts, in September.
Consequently Chinese consumers might have to wait until a stage to enjoy Apple Intelligence functionalities. Additionally at its inception Apple Intelligence will exclusively cater to U.S. Users with plans for language support slated for 2025. The delay in introducing these features to China places Apple at a disadvantage vis a vis smartphone brands such as Vivo, Huawei, Xiaomi and Honor which have already integrated AI capabilities, into their products.
