In a surprising turn of events, Amazon lays off 180 employees from its gaming division. As part of their plan to improve Prime Gaming services Amazon is making changes that will enhance the selection of monthly games, for subscribers.
Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games expressed the companys dedication to meeting customer expectations by offering a range of games. In an email Hartmann emphasized that they are focusing on refining the Prime benefit and prioritizing customer desires. However this decision does come at a cost as it involves letting go of than 180 positions, within the company.
The Impact on Teams and Future Direction

Amazon lays off employees across various teams, including the entire Crown Channel Twitch channel and the Game Growth team. The Crown Channel, which is well known for its gaming shows featuring streamers recently came under scrutiny, for inflating viewership numbers artificially.
This layoff is the downsizing in Amazons game division this year following a previous reduction of 100 employees in April. However Amazons game studios have not been impacted by these changes. Hartmann acknowledged the nature of these decisions. Emphasized that they were made after careful consideration of the companys future, in gaming.
Industry-Wide Layoffs and Amazon’s Position

Amazon lays off workers in a year that has seen widespread job losses across the gaming industry, with notable layoffs at Ubisoft, Digital Extremes, and Bungie. The current trend demonstrates the difficulties, in the industry and the necessity for companies to quickly adjust to changing market conditions.
As Amazon makes staff reductions in its gaming division it is redirecting its efforts, towards improving its Prime Gaming services. This strategic shift aims to meet customer preferences and optimize operations all while navigating the ever changing gaming landscape.
