Epic Games faces $520M FTC penalty; 37M users may get refunds for in-game charges: Epic Games’ Settlement. The aftermath of the dispute, between Epic Games and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken a turn. US regulatory authorities have started notifying a 37 million individuals that they may be eligible for reimbursement.

To provide some background Epic Games faced a penalty of $520 million from the FTC in December 2022. This penalty was divided into two parts of Epic Games’ Settlement;

  • 1. $275 million for violating the Childrens Online Privacy Act (COPPA).
  • 2. $245 million for misleading users into purchases involving currencies and in game assets.
Epic Games' Settlement

The second portion of the penalty aims to compensate users who had in game transactions. According to the FTCs criteria users can request refunds if they;

  • 1. Were charged in game currency for items between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • 2. Had their children make charges on a credit card without consent between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • 3. Were denied access to their Epic Account between January 2017 and September 2022 after filing a complaint about charges with their credit card provider.

For those, in claiming a refund the FTC has created a webpage where users can initiate the refund process using either a claim number or their Epic Account ID. It’s important to note that the deadline, for applications is January 17 2024. Moreover the FTC has assured users that their Fortnite accounts and in game purchases will not be affected after filing a claim.

The exact refund amount will depend on factors, including the number of people who make claims. In response to the Epic Games’ Settlement has expressed its commitment to going beyond industry standards. The company emphasized its dedication to protecting consumers and improving the gaming experience. A representative from Epic Games stated, “We have been progressively making changes to align our system with what players and regulators expect. We hope that our efforts will set a standard, for the gaming industry.”
