Its expansive open world, reminiscent of Zelda; Breath of the Wild invites exploration using a grapple and glider. However after spending 27 hours playing its Early Access version I’ve noticed a change in my excitement. Despite its scale and impressive technical aspects Enshrouded seems safe for a survival game lacking the sense of danger that often defines this genre.
In Enshrouded players take on the role of Flameborns who must reclaim Embervale from a plague. The games core strength lies in its building system that allows for designs and terraforming. Combat in Enshrouded is robust with styles like melee combat, magic usage or archery. The inclusion of a skill tree adds depth to the gameplay; however the forgiving nature of the game undermines its survival elements. Death has consequences and features like managing food intake and sleep feel more optional, than necessary.
The Serenity of Enshrouded
Enshroudeds world although vast lacks variety in its environment. Feels somewhat devoid of activity. The fast travel system discourages the creation of bases and the overall world design lacks a sense of urgency or opposition. As a result the game offers a tranquil but flat gaming experience. However its true potential lies in its building systems and multiplayer mode, for up to 16 players, which provides a laid back approach to survival gaming.
Currently in Access Enshrouded is likely to undergo changes based on player feedback. It can be considered a choice for those who are looking for a survival game or wish to enjoy fantasy construction with friends using Lego like blocks. Hopefully future updates will introduce survival elements and increase the level of threat to enhance the overall gaming experience.
