Swedish gaming powerhouse Embracer has struck a deal to transfer ownership of Gearbox Entertainment, the developer, behind the popular Borderlands series to American publisher Take Two Interactive. The sale, valued at $460 million will bring Gearbox and its game titles like Borderlands, Tiny Tinas Wonderlands and other properties under Take Twos 2K Games brand. This transaction is set to be finalized by the end of June. Is expected to decrease Embracers debt by approximately $300 327 million.
Embracers CEO Lars Wingefors mentioned that selling Gearbox marks a move in reshaping Embracer’s future with a reduced debt and improved cash flow. With Gearbox on board Take Two will further enrich its game lineup that includes hit franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and NBA 2K. Embracer had acquired Gearbox as part of a buying spree in 2021 for up to $1.4 billion but is now parting ways, with the studio.
What this Means for Embracer and Gearbox’s Future

With the acquisition of Gearbox, by Embracer the focus will now shift towards integrating the remaining assets into parts of the company. Embracer still holds onto the rights for titles such as Remnant and Hyper Light Breaker. On the hand Gearbox is set to leverage Take Twos resources to enhance their known franchises under the 2K publishing label.
This deal signifies a beginning for both Embracer and Gearbox. The sale of Gearbox brings in needed cash for Embracer and aids in reducing their debt marking a step in their restructuring process. While Gearbox gains stability under Take Twos supervision there is also a loss of some degree of independence. Fans can anticipate offerings from Gearbox in the future with 2Ks support through marketing and funding. Overall this transaction worth $460 million proves beneficial, for both companies as they move forward into their stages.
