Google Translate, the translation tool has recently expanded significantly. The tech company has introduced 110 languages to its platform bringing the number of supported languages to an impressive 243. This development further establishes Google Translate as a choice, for translation services surpassing competitors like Apple Translate and Microsoft Translator.
The expansion was made possible by leveraging Googles PaLM 2 language model. The added languages cover a range of regions and demographics including Afar, Cantonese, Manx, NKo, Punjabi (Shahmukhi) Tamazight (Amazigh) and Tok Pisin. With these additions Google Translate now serves a 614 million speakers worldwide making up, around 8% of the population.
Diversity and Inclusivity in Language Support
Among the 110 languages recently added a notable number come from Africa highlighting Google Translates focus on embracing diversity and inclusivity. Languages, like Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda and Wolof from Africa are now included in the platform making it the largest expansion of languages far.
By including both spoken languages with speaker populations and those used by smaller indigenous groups Google shows its commitment, to preserving and celebrating linguistic traditions. The company also recognizes the significance of supporting languages undergoing revitalization efforts if they have limited numbers of speakers left.
