Bringing the Dark to Drive – Google Drive Gets Dark Mode

Google Drive now lets you browse files in a darker and easier on the eyes display with the new Google Drive dark mode.

Google has been expanding dark mode options across its apps and services, helping users spend more time comfortably looking at screens in different lighting. In the latest update, cloud storage powerhouse Google Drive is the newest to receive a dark theme, bringing the feature users have been requesting to the web interface.

The new Google Drive dark mode can be enabled by going to the settings menu and selecting the appearance option. This changes the Drive interface colors to a darker gray palette, making file browsing and document viewing easier on the eyes. While the search bar and sidebar take on deeper shades, lighter accents are used on interactive elements.

A First Step Towards More Workspace Apps

While the change has only recently started rolling out, it is welcome news for Google Drive fans. As one of the first major Workspace apps to get dark mode, it provides hope that other services like Docs, Sheets and Slides may soon follow suit. For now, the updated theme only applies to the file management view, but continued expansion could see the entire editing experience darkened as well.

The addition of dark mode in Google Drive shows Google’s commitment to providing user experience improvements across its offerings. As more people spend increased time in front of screens every day, features like this help reduce eye strain. It marks an important accessibility update for Google Workspace and hints at more advanced customization options to come throughout the suite of productivity and collaboration tools.
