Microsoft achieved a milestone with Windows 11 overtaking Windows 10 as the preferred operating system among PC gamers on Steam according to the latest August data, from the Steam hardware survey report. Windows 11 now holds a usage share of 49 percent which’s a 3 percent rise compared to the prior month while Windows 10 has experienced a decline of around 3 percent and currently stands at 47 percent in terms of usage share.
The increase in the usage of Windows 11 is a development for Microsoft since it has been consistently growing in popularity since its release in 2021 despite the companys intention to discontinue support for Windows 10 by October 2025; the older system has still been widely used in recent times though the most recent data shows that PC gamers are now more open, to adopting the newer Windows 11 operating system.

The rise in demand for Windows 11 extends beyond gamers according to web usage data from StatCounter which indicates a notable increase in market share from approximately 23 percent in July 2023 to nearly 32 percent in August 2024 This uptick implies that a larger number of users are transitioning to the newest operating system irrespective of their affiliation, with gaming.
Microsofts stringent hardware demands for Windows 11 posed an obstacle to its acceptance rate when compared to Windows 10 due to requirements such as a TPM security chip and CPUs from 2018 onward.However this trend is changing gradually as users upgrade their devices and new PCs hit the market.Windows 11s popularity is on the rise, with Microsofts announcement of charging both businesses and consumers for ongoing Windows 10 support post October 2025.This move is expected to further drive the adoption of Windows 11 in the upcoming months and years.
