Uncertainty Surrounds the Future of the KOTOR Remake

Is the KOTOR Remake facing an uncertain fate?

The Star Wars community is abuzz with apprehension regarding the fate of the KOTOR Remake. The Knights of the Old Republic first released in 2003 is a role playing game, in the Star Wars gaming world. Its impact continues to be felt as seen with the addition, to the Old Republic storyline that was revealed in February 2022.

Sonys exciting announcement, in September 2021 regarding their partnership, with developer Aspyr to bring back this RPG from 2003 was met with excitement. However, the KOTOR Remake has since witnessed a rocky development journey. Although it was speculated that Saber Interactive would take over the development responsibilities the changes made by the Embracer Group have raised concerns, about the direction of the project.

Fueling these concerns, a Reddit thread highlighted that the KOTOR Remake’s announcement trailer from September 2021 had been mysteriously set to private, rendering it inaccessible to fans. This wasn’t a one time occurrence.

Tweets that were celebrating the announcement of the game have mysteriously disappeared. While there is still a Sony blog post discussing the remake that can be accessed it doesn’t exactly instill confidence when it comes to the state of the game.

The gaming community’s sentiment is palpable, with many expressing skepticism about the KOTOR Remake ever seeing the light of day. Many people are expressing doubts and skepticism regarding the release of the game. Sony recently stated to Kotaku that the removal of the trailer was due, to music licensing problems.

However fans find this explanation inadequate considering that the only music in the trailer was the known Star Wars theme, which should not pose any licensing issues. Sonys lack of response, on social media deletions and their vague communication approach has only fueled skepticism.

The timing of this controversy couldn’t be worse. The gaming industry is rife with news of mass layoffs and halted projects, further dampening hopes for the KOTOR Remake. However fans of Star Wars can find comfort in knowing that there are Star Wars projects, on the horizon. These include Ubisofts Star Wars Outlaws, Respawns first person shooter set in the Star Wars universe (which’s yet to be named) and Star Wars; Eclipse, a game that takes place during the High Republic era.
