Sony has unveiled its latest financial results, revealing that PlayStation 5 sales have experienced a year-over-year decline. During the three months of the 2025 year from April, to June 2024 the company managed to sell 2.4 million PlayStation 5 units. This figure represents a drop from the 3.3 million units sold in the period, in the previous year.
Despite the decrease, in sales the PlayStation 5 has achieved an accomplishment by selling a total of 61.7 million units since its debut in 2020. Initially aiming to sell 25 million units in the year Sony adjusted its target to 21 million units. However, the company ultimately fell short, ending the year with 20.8 million units sold, which still marked a record for PlayStation 5 sales.
Monthly Active Users on the Rise
Despite a decrease, in PlayStation 5 sales, Sony noted a rise in the number of users, which is an important indicator of audience involvement and potential revenue growth from subscriptions, software and other sources. The company saw 116 million users in this period slightly lower than the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year (118 million) but significantly higher, than the 108 million users reported a year ago.
Experts, in the industry are saying that the drop in hardware sales could be linked to the absence of PlayStation 5 games. Sony has confirmed that there won’t be any releases from franchises like Spider Man, God of War The Last of Us, Ratchet and Clank Horizon or Ghost of Tsushima this fiscal year. With the PlayStation 5 now in its year on the market it’s a waiting game to see how Sony will tackle the challenges ahead and keep up with changing consumer preferences and intense competition, in the gaming sector.
