It seems this Crazy Taxi Reboot will be well worth the wait for fans of the classic.

Fans were thrilled late last year when Sega announced they had several fan-favorite franchises from the past in development for modern platforms. Among these was everyone’s favorite taxi driving arcade game from the late 90s, Crazy Taxi. While details were light at the announcement, a Sega executive recently opened up more about their vision for the Crazy Taxi Reboot.

In an interview with The Japan Times, Takaya Segawa who helps oversee development at Sega’s Sapporo studio mentioned their involvement with the Crazy Taxi Reboot. He referred to it specifically as a “triple-A title,” suggesting Sega aims to bring their iconic arcade racer back in a big way. With next-gen technology now available, it seems Sega wants to do the Crazy Taxi concept justice with high production values.

When you hear a game is getting the “triple-A” treatment, it usually means a substantial budget, lengthy development cycles, and top-tier presentation. For the Crazy Taxi Reboot this could mean gorgeous city environments to race through, a massive soundtrack of licensed tunes both new and old, plus modern driving mechanics. It’s also possible they may expand on the core gameplay loop with new objectives, competitive multiplayer, or an expanded single player campaign of some sort. With any luck we’ll learn more concrete details soon!

Fans have been hoping for a new Crazy Taxi for years so this confirmation it’s being handled as a major release is very exciting. Sega seems committed to bringing back its legendary franchises in a big way. If done right, the Crazy Taxi Reboot could help introduce a whole new generation to the zany arcade racing thrills of the Dreamcast original. Only time will tell but so far the signs are very promising for fans of this crazy taxi driving classic.
