PUBG Takes the Battle Royale War to the Next Level

The original battle royale pioneer PUBG is bringing environmental destruction and advanced movement to the fight against Fortnite in 2024.

After years of being overshadowed by Fortnite’s outlandish seasons and collaborations, the original battle royale pioneer PUBG is fighting back in 2024. Developers have unveiled an explosive roadmap headlined by groundbreaking environmental destruction and transportation additions coming to the game. These changes aim to raise the bar for the entire genre and bring new competitive depth to the experience that made PUBG a sensation.

The biggest headline is destructible environments, which will allow new strategic possibilities by way of destruction. While not on the scale of leveling full buildings, select “sections” of the map can now be broken apart with tools or explosives. This shakes up standard tactics and forces adaptation to the changing landscape. Further destruction improvements are planned after an initial April release focused on digging holes in the environment.

Additional emphasis is being placed on logistics with new transportation items in development. Portable ziplines could provide swift aerial movement, building on recent additions like climbing and vehicle vaulting. Frequent bi-monthly gun balancing aims to keep the competitive meta fresh, with SMG reworks and tweaks to assault rifles like the SCAR-L and AKM lined up.

Beyond the headline updates, PUBG developers are focused on sustained quality-of-life changes. A new ranked team mode tracks squad performance over multiple matches, while a shift to Unreal Engine 5 and modding support will help maintain the game. With over 3 million cheating accounts banned in 2023, stringent anti-cheat efforts also continue to ensure the PUBG experience remains fair and fun. These ambitious plans show how PUBG is ready to reclaim its crown at the top of the battle royale genre.
