Overwatch 2 Loses Hero Mastery Gauntlet Mode in Season 11

Overwatch 2 ditches Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode as it struggles to retain players.

Blizzard Entertainment recently announced that Overwatch 2 will be discontinuing the Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode starting from the Season 11. This decision comes amidst challenges, in retaining and engaging players despite the games promotion as a sequel offering exciting elements.

The Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode, which was introduced in March 2023 added a twist to the Hero Mastery mode by featuring hero specific obstacle courses. In this mode teams of three players worked together to defend towers against approaching enemies while striving to achieve scores. However it failed to capture the interest of players leading Blizzard to opt for its removal, from the game.

Since its release Overwatch 2 has been facing some challenges, in keeping players engaged with its content. The game has already experienced the elimination of elements like the skill trees and hero missions in the PvE suite and there are talks about the story mode being scrapped after just three missions.

The removal of the Hero Mastery Gauntlet mode is another sign of the games struggle to maintain its identity, as a sequel. With Overwatch 2 dropping features that were meant to distinguish it from its predecessor players are left pondering what lies ahead for the game and whether it will be able to fulfill its promises.
