Instagram Tests Unskippable Ads, Sparking User Backlash

Instagram's test of unskippable ads has users up in arms.

Instagram has confirmed that it is testing a new feature that forces users to view unskippable ads before they can continue browsing content. The alteration, initially noticed by app user Dan Levy has stirred up a commotion, within Instagrams community prompting users to consider leaving the platform if the modification remains permanent.

The latest feature called “ad break” includes a timer that stops users from moving on until the ad completes. Users might have to watch the ad before they can keep browsing, which means the ads cannot be skipped.

Instagram Tests Unskippable Ads, Sparking User Backlash

There is a lot of talk, about how Instagram might be focusing on making money from ads than on keeping users happy. A number of users are not happy with the changes. Are wondering if Instagram is more interested, in getting people to interact with ads than thinking about how it affects its users.

Despite the backlash, Instagram has declined to provide further details on where in the app the unskippable ads are being tested, or whether the feature is being rolled out globally. The company mentioned that they are constantly trying out formats to benefit advertisers and will inform users of any changes resulting from the tests. Yet the strong negative feedback, from users implies that Instagram might need to rethink its strategy to prevent upsetting its user community.
