A rising number of homeowners are using the blurring feature, on Google Maps to safeguard their residences against burglaries. This trend is a response to the concern that criminals might utilize Google Maps street view images to survey properties pinpointing security weaknesses like side windows, fences and camera positions.

According to interviews with apprehended burglars they frequently rely on platforms such as Google Maps to scout houses, before attempting break ins.

Cybersecurity expert Jay Gehringer highlights the importance of blurring your homes location on Google Maps for security. To blur your property you can simply find it on Google Maps select “report a problem” at the corner answer a few questions and submit your request to Google. Once the blurring is done it cannot be reversed.

Although blurring your homes image may not completely deter burglaries Detective Zuetel suggests that it can make your residence less attractive, to intruders. Gehringer also mentions that while most thieves prefer to assess properties taking this step can offer a modest yet significant boost in safety. With more homeowners getting acquainted with this feature the practice of blurring homes, on Google Maps is expected to gain popularity.
