Users of Google Maps might soon notice an appearance and user experience, in the navigation application. Reports suggest that Google is currently testing changes to the interface of Google Maps aiming to modify how overlay screens are displayed and simplify the process of inputting directions.
The goal of the redesign is to exhibit more of the map upfront than concealing it behind full screen overlays. The overlay layers now feature corners. Can be easily dismissed with a single tap. With regards to entering directions the new design presents a panel at the bottom, for selecting start points, destinations and route options without taking up the screen.
Furthermore contextual information sheets no longer stack as layers on top of each other. This results in an interface that still offers details without blocking the map below. If these tests prove successful there’s a chance that this updated interface could be rolled out widely in the future.
An Iterative Process
It’s interesting to note that Google has made adjustments, to the appearance of Google Maps. Previous versions were tested briefly. Then reverted back. The current update appears to have taken into account feedback, from users showing that Google is willing to make improvements based on testing results. This iterative approach suggests that the apps interface will be more user friendly while still providing mapping features.
By simplifying the interface and focusing more on the map itself Google Maps is evolving in a way that could enhance user satisfaction. Only time will tell if these refined changes will succeed where past attempts fell short. Regardless users can expect Google Maps to continue getting better as their go to navigation app.
