Epic Games Announces Major Updates at State of Unreal 2024

Epic teased physics gameplay and a first look at a new Marvel game at State of Unreal 2024.

Epic Games held their highly anticipated State of Unreal 2024 keynote at the 2024 Game Developers Conference yesterday. At the event, Epic outlined their vision and upcoming plans for the popular Unreal Engine 5 real-time rendering tool. New features and integrations were announced that will further push the boundaries of interactive experiences.

One of the most exciting reveals was the addition of Epic’s hyper-realistic MetaHumans tools to both Fortnite Creative and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Creators will now be able to import customized MetaHuman characters directly to build immersive new games and worlds. Epic also teased “physics sandbox gameplay” coming later to the tools, allowing dynamic interaction between players and objects.

Mobile is a Focus

State of Unreal 2024

Epic reiterated their goal of launching the Epic Games Store on both iOS and Android mobile platforms later this year. A concept image showed what the store may look like adapted for touchscreens. Unreal Engine’s multi-platform capabilities and scalability will be key to expanding where creators can build State of Unreal 2024.

The keynote also included a surprise first look at 1943: Rise of Hydra, a new narrative-driven Marvel game in development. Further advancing cinematic storytelling was a focus of the State of Unreal 2024 presentation. Expect more blockbuster titles to leverage the engine’s powerful toolset.
