Age of Mythology Retold Coming to Consoles and PC Later This Year

The epic return of the gods in "Age of Mythology Retold"

Age of Mythology was a beloved real-time strategy game that took players out of the realms of history and thrust them into a magical world of Greek, Norse and Egyptian gods when it first launched back in 2002. Developed by Ensemble Studios, it gave fans of the Age of Empires series a fresh new setting to lose themselves in. Now, over 15 years later, World’s Edge and Xbox Game Studios have announced they are hard at work on a remaster titled Age of Mythology Retold that promises to bring the epic god-powered battles of the original into the present day.

Age of Mythology Retold will launch simultaneously on Xbox and Windows PC later this year as a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. This will allow strategy fans across both platforms to rediscover or experience for the first time the magical multiplayer and single player campaigns that saw them commanding gods like Zeus, Odin and Ra in expansive real-time battles. Under the leadership of art director Melinda Rose, the game is receiving an engine upgrade along with all new 3D character models, animations and visual effects to breathe new life into the mythical world.

Rose showed off early work-in-progress augmented reality models of iconic units like the three-headed hound Cerberus, the winged horse Pegasus and the snake-haired Gorgon Medusa. These gave a glimpse of the higher production values Age of Mythology Retold will have compared to its 2002 predecessor. “Our goal is to not only pay homage to the past but to breathe new life into this game.” Rose stated. The remaster promises to keep everything fans loved about the original while modernizing the experience overall for modern platforms.

With release planned before the end of 2022, Age of Mythology Retold looks set to enchant strategy fans both old and new as well as provide hundreds of hours of additional content through its new online multiplayer and campaign modes. Its return to store shelves and digital marketplaces could be the spark that reignites the mythological wars for a whole new generation. Exciting times are indeed ahead for those eager to once more command the gods of world mythology.
